• Very common: dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, diarrhoea. Common: headache. Uncommon: anaemia, allergic reactions, dizziness, somnolence, vertigo, increased blood pressure, flushing, GI haemorrhage, stomatitis, gastritis, eructation, liver function disorder, angioedema, pruritus, rash, sodium/water retention, hyperkalaemia, abnormal renal tests, oedema. Rare: blood count abnormalities, mood changes, visual disturbance, tinnitus, palpitations, asthma in NSAID-allergic patients, colitis, gastroduodenal ulcer, oesophagitis, SJS/TEN, urticaria. Very rare: GI perforation, hepatitis, bullous dermatitis, erythema multiforme, acute renal failure, agranulocytosis. • GI bleeding, ulceration or perforation, sometimes fatal, can occur at any time; risk is higher with higher doses, history of ulcer and in the elderly; consider gastroprotection (misoprostol or proton pump inhibitor); avoid combination with other NSAIDs including COX-2 inhibitors. • Meloxicam: Oxicam NSAID with anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties; like other NSAIDs it inhibits the biosynthesis of prostaglandins (precise mechanism not fully known).
