• Systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids can produce reversible HPA axis suppression, Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia and glucosuria. • Pregnancy Category C (historical US labeling). • It is not known whether topical administration of corticosteroids could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in breast milk. • Betamethasone: Topical corticosteroids share anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and vasoconstrictive actions via intracellular glucocorticoid receptor-mediated gene regulation of inflammatory mediators. Percutaneous absorption increases with inflammation and occlusion.
