• Local adverse reactions of topical corticosteroids include burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, skin maceration, secondary infection, skin atrophy, striae and miliaria. • Systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids can produce reversible HPA axis suppression, Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia and glucosuria. Risk factors include higher potency, large surface area, prolonged use and occlusive dressings. • Topical corticosteroids should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Betamethasone dipropionate has been shown to be teratogenic in rabbits by the intramuscular route.
