• The following local adverse reactions are reported infrequently with topical corticosteroids, especially under occlusive dressings: burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, maceration, secondary infection, skin atrophy, striae, miliaria.International label, same formulation · DailyMed / FDA

• Systemic absorption may produce reversible HPA axis suppression, Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia and glucosuria. Conditions increasing absorption include higher potency, large surface area, prolonged use and occlusive dressings. • Pregnancy Category C (historical FDA). Corticosteroids are generally teratogenic in laboratory animals at relatively low systemic doses; more potent agents have been teratogenic after dermal application in animals. Use in pregnancy only if benefit justifies risk; avoid extensive use, large amounts or prolonged periods in pregnant patients.International label, same formulation · DailyMed / FDA
• It is not known whether topical administration of corticosteroids could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in breast milk. Systemically administered corticosteroids are secreted into breast milk in quantities not likely to have a deleterious effect on the infant.
