• Intravenous verapamil often lowers blood pressure (usually transient); symptomatic hypotension occurred in about 1.5% of patients. It may rarely cause second- or third-degree AV block, extreme bradycardia or asystole, more likely in sick sinus syndrome. • There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women; animal studies showed no teratogenicity but embryocidal effects and retarded fetal growth at maternally toxic doses; use during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
