• Do not take daily for more than five days without investigating the cause of constipation; long-term daily use of stimulant laxatives may harm bowel function. Prolonged excessive use can cause fluid and electrolyte imbalance and hypokalaemia; stop and restart only under medical supervision in patients for whom dehydration is harmful (e.g. renal insufficiency, elderly). Stimulant laxatives do not help weight loss. • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women; long experience has shown no evidence of undesirable or damaging effects.
