• Pioglitazone: Thiazolidinedione that depends on the presence of insulin; decreases insulin resistance in the periphery and liver via PPAR-gamma agonism (US Duetact label).
• Metformin: Decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal glucose absorption and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization; insulin secretion remains unchanged (US label).
