Niaspan 750 mg prolonged-release tablets (Aeropharm Technology LLC-USA > Abbott Laboratories): extended-release nicotinic acid (niacin) for dyslipidaemia; 14 tablets.

• Adjunct to diet to reduce elevated TC, LDL-C, Apo B and TG and increase HDL-C in primary hyperlipidemia and mixed dyslipidemia (also with simvastatin or lovastatin when monotherapy is inadequate); reduce risk of recurrent nonfatal MI in patients with prior MI and hyperlipidemia; with a bile acid resin to slow progression or promote regression of atherosclerosis; adjunct for severe hypertriglyceridemia with pancreatitis risk.Population: AdultsDailyMed (NLM)

• Most common (>5% and greater than placebo): flushing, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, increased cough and pruritus; flushing may be reduced by aspirin pretreatment and slow titration.International label, same formulation · DailyMed (NLM)

• Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations in hepatic transaminases; active peptic ulcer disease; arterial bleeding; hypersensitivity to niacin or any component.International label, same formulation · DailyMed (NLM)

• Severe hepatic toxicity, including fulminant hepatic necrosis, has occurred when sustained-release niacin was substituted for immediate-release niacin at equivalent doses; use with caution with substantial alcohol use or a history of liver disease. Rhabdomyolysis has been associated with lipid-altering niacin doses (>=1 g/day) combined with statins. Niacin can raise fasting blood glucose (monitor diabetics). • Older US label (historical Pregnancy Category C): no animal reproduction studies; unknown whether lipid-lowering niacin doses cause fetal harm. Discontinue if a woman treated for primary hyperlipidemia becomes pregnant; for hypertriglyceridemia assess benefits and risks individually.
