• Metronidazole: After passive diffusion into susceptible anaerobes it is reduced intracellularly (via electron-transport proteins such as ferredoxin) to a short-lived nitroso free radical; the reduced drug and free radicals can interact with DNA, inhibiting DNA synthesis and causing DNA degradation and bacterial death; the precise mechanism is unclear (US label).
