• Most commonly diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. Common: mucocutaneous candidosis, diarrhoea. Uncommon: dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, rises in AST/ALT, rash, pruritus, urticaria. • Animal studies show no harmful effects and limited human data do not indicate increased malformation risk; prophylactic use in preterm premature rupture of membranes may be associated with increased neonatal necrotising enterocolitis. • Amoxicillin: Semisynthetic penicillin that inhibits penicillin-binding proteins in bacterial peptidoglycan (cell wall) synthesis, leading to cell lysis; it is degraded by beta-lactamases.
• Clavulanic acid: Beta-lactam structurally related to penicillins that inactivates some beta-lactamase enzymes, protecting amoxicillin from degradation and extending its spectrum; no clinically useful antibacterial effect alone.
